Closed bridge on major route causing lengthy delays in Northampton

A closed bridge on a road leading into Northampton is causing lengthy delays for motorists travelling into the town centre.

The Spencer Bridge on the A4500 is shut eastbound due to road patching between Gladstone Road and St Andrew’s Road.

Diversions are in place, taking motorists south towards the Towcester Road roundabout, or north on Gladstone Road.

However some motorists hoping to get to the town centre have reported delays of up to 45 minutes in queuing traffic.

Work is expected to finish at 3.30pm.

A spokesman for the council said: “Carriageway patching work has been taking place in Spencer Bridge Road, Northampton, at off-peak times yesterday and today. This is between 9.30am and 3.30pm.

“This morning the road was completely closed for about one hour while an inspection of the bridge took place. However after this it was open again under traffic management.

“The work will be completed today – hopefully by 3pm.”
