Clearing up Northamptonshire grot spot '˜not local authority problem' says council... despite sign urging people to report flytippers

It left Ron Oliver confused as he had earlier photographed a sign at the site - in Brampton Lane, opposite the Windhover pub - that urges the public to report illegal dumping to the authorities.

He said: “There’s sofas, old carpet, toys, bin liners full of rubbish.

“I called Northampton Borough Council as instructed and was told it was private land.

“Why do they have a sign saying ‘see it, report it’ if the land is owned privately?”

Mr Oliver said he originally tried to report the issue at the site - which is used as a car park by walkers on the Brampton Valley Way - on July 4 and was told by the borough council it was to be cleared in the coming days.

After several weeks on inaction by the authorities, he rang again, and this time was told the land was private.

“They can’t have it both ways,” he said. “Either it’s on the to-do list or they don’t own it”.

The borough council has since confirmed to the Chron that the land is not actually theirs. However, no council has yet claimed responsibility for the site - or the sign.
