The horseman statue on the former Chronicle & Echo building in Northampton is to be preserved in the restored Phipps brewery in the town.

Aldi, which recently bought the building off Johnston Press, is currently in the process of demolishing the site so it can be converted into a supermarket.

The supermarket chain has agreed to allow Alaric Neville, owner of Phipps Northampton Brewery Company (NBC), to move the horseman statue which used to sit on the front of the Upper Mounts building to the Albion Brewery in Kingswell Street.

A spokesman for Aldi said a public consultation would be carried out before a planning application for the new store was submitted to Northampton Borough Council. A public exhibition of the plans will take place in the next month.

A spokesman for Aldi said: “We are excited about being able to preserve part of the site’s history as the former home of the Northampton Chronicle and Echo, whilst at the same time being able to confirm that we are hoping to increase our offering in the town and provide local residents with more shopping choice.

“The plans for the redevelopment of the site are still at an early stage and we are keen to ensure that the views of the local community are heard.

“A community newsletter will be sent to residents in the coming weeks and we are looking to hold a public exhibition soon.”

Alaric Neville of Phipps NBC, said he was delighted to be able to give a new home to the old Northampton Mercury and Herald horseman statue from the front of the Chronicle & Echo building.

He said: “Our founder Pickering Phipps saw an advert for a vacant brewery on Bridge Street in the 18th January 1817 paper and moved the company into the town as a consequence. Down the years The Mercury, Herald, Chronicle and Echo have all reported and supported Phipps so we feel a debt of gratitude.

“The statue and plaque will become a feature of our new bar in the restored Albion Brewery which will open at the end of the year and will be on display for all to see along with other historical Northampton brewing artefacts.”
