Charity urges public to support cancer patients at weekly drop-in
Northamptonshire charity needs complementary therapists, counsellors and volunteers to help support local people with cancer and their carers.
Integrated Cancer Therapies, a local Northamptonshire charity offers a range of free support to cancer patients. Every Tuesday they provide complementary therapy sessions alongside support to cancer patients and their carers.
The drop-in sessions run from 9.30am-4pm at the Community Hall, High Street, Old Village, Corby and are open to anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer or is in remission. They also offer a chance for patients’ family and friends to gather for a chat and to access the relaxation session.
Integrated Cancer Therapies is seeking complementary therapists, counsellors and ‘meet and greet’ volunteers to assist them in providing this support.
Debra Bromley, of Integrated Cancer Therapies said complementary therapies may help patients cope with the effects of their condition and hospital treatment, while volunteers get real satisfaction from seeing the difference they are making to people’s lives.
“More than one in three people will develop cancer at some point in their lifetime and complementary therapies may help manage the side effects of cancer and treatment like chemotherapy and radiotherapy by helping people relax and sleep better.”
There’s no need to have previous experience of working with cancer patients, as Integrated Cancer Therapies will provide training and be on hand to give support.
“Our therapists and meet and greet staff go through a recruitment process and are mentored by more experienced volunteers who are used to working with cancer patients,” adds Debra. The role of meet and greet volunteers is vital in setting up the session each Tuesday and offering visitors a warm welcome and helping them feel comfortable.
“Cancer does touch such a large number of the population and people do often want to do something to help,” adds Debra.
“We would love to hear from people who can give a little of their time, whether as ‘meet and greet’ volunteers, counsellors or complementary therapists.”
