Charity staff left feeling 'soul destroyed' after break-in at Northampton store

Store manager, Anita Stevenson of Cancer Research UK was left feeling "soul destroyed" following a break-in involving the Market Square store, which is understood to have taken place on Monday, November 28.

Mrs Stevenson told the Chronicle & Echo that the charity shop does not have CCTV because it has to be careful with costs as donations should fund research.

She said: “We were broken into through the back window, I think there was more than one person. They used a crowbar and made their way through the back fire exit door and pushed and chipped it and got in that way.

“I have been walking around picking up empty hangers, it was soul destroying and so so sad because we leave the shop looking lovely.

“They have taken some really nice things, I know that they've taken really good stuff as I can tell by the rails. They have taken donations, which were in a charity goblet and cash from a drop-in-draw which is meant to be really safe. I was so upset that this could be happening to a charity, it's the lowest thing that could happen.”

The manager is now appealing for donations, good quality stock and local businesses to donate funds for a CCTV camera to be installed for the safety of the store.

A spokeswoman for Northamptonshire police said: “The incident was reported to take place overnight on Monday, November 28 from 6pm and was reported on Tuesday morning.”
