A fake letter supposedly from Northampton Borough Council claiming to be fitting radon gas monitors has been delivered to an address in the town.

A spokesman for the council said the letter, which bore the borough’s logo, was not sent by the authority.

“The letter informs people that Environmental Health Officers will be visiting properties within the coming fortnight to install mandatory radon gas monitoring devices in their homes,” he said.

“Council officials have warned the letter is a fake and warns people to contact the council if they received one. It is believed the letters have been posted in the NN1 area of the town, but it is not known if they have been more widely distributed,” he added.

Northampton Borough Council wishes to be clear that it does not undertake radon testing, and would not undertake any work without a pre-arranged appointment.

“Should anyone receive a letter, could they please contact Northampton Borough Council Community Safety Team on 01604 837752,” he added.
