A car caught fire outside three schools in Daventry this morning.

The Vauxhall Zafira was parked in Hawke Road, on the Southbrook estate, outside the three schools that make up the DSLV academy.

It caught fire at around 8.45am as children were just starting school.

Pupils and staff at the nearest classroom - the Reception class – were safely evacuated before the explosion.

A car parked next to the Zafira was also badly damaged by the fire.

Two fire crews were called to deal with the blaze.

The fire came the day after Vauxhall issued a warning about certain models of Zafiras overheating and catching fire. It is not known if this vehicle was one of those specific types.
