Businesses call for changes at Northampton junction where two drivers were hospitalised

A junction where near misses happen every other day needs to be reconfigured, businesses have said.

The call from firms based at Lodge Farm Industrial Estate comes after a two-vehicle crash yesterday at the Harlestone Road / Lodge Way junction that left both drivers in hospital.

Mick Field, who works nearby in Belmont Press, reported the accident and said he saw two or three near misses a week owing to the layout of the junction, which was renewed about five years ago.

He said: “The main issue is drivers exiting Lodge Farm and Firs View Drive directly face each other; if they drive straight ahead they would collide head on.

“Discipline in all directions is confusing and because of this minor accidents and near misses are frequent and seemingly go unrecorded by the highways department.

“These aren’t idiot drivers, it’s an idiot junction.”

The accident yesterday involved a silver Toyota and a blue Nissan, which saw one of the drivers cut free by firefighters who had to remove the roof of one of the cars.

Northamptonshire County Council has been approached for a comment.
