But Prince Sodipe, who lives on the street, said the water had already managed to get “ankle deep” in his home before engineers arrived - some three hours after he first made calls to the water company.

“For the past four hours water has been gushing into the houses,” he said.

“We are still trying to get the water out now.

“If they had got here earlier the damage wouldn’t have been as bad.”

Anglian Water has issued a statement on its website, saying: “We are really sorry but some customers in Lower Meadow Court, Northampton, may have very low water pressure or none at all.

“We’ve got a burst main in your area and we are working hard to get it fixed so that we can get your supply back to normal as soon as possible.”
