'˜Bungalows' plan goes against Northampton area's need for family homes

A proposal to demolish a Northampton street and replace it with '˜bungalows' topped with maisonettes has been criticised by a former council leader.

Buildings in Little Cross Street, in Spring Boroughs, will be knocked down but the various schemes for replacing them are contentious.

Residents were in favour of new family houses with a rebuilt corner shop, but Northampton Partnership Homes (which works on behalf of Northampton Borough Council) are now considering a street of purely ‘bungalows’ and ‘town houses’.

Former borough council leader John Dickie said: “It’s an absurdity.

“This street is right in the heart of our community and it needs family homes.

“We have one-bedroom homes coming out of our earholes. We need a mix of a housing so that Spring Boroughs has a balance.

“Yes, it gives NPH two bites of the cherry when it comes to rent, but that’s not of benefit to the people of Spring Boroughs.”

Next month residents will be asked to vote in the referendum on the Spring Boroughs Neighbourhood Plan, which emphasises the desire for more family homes.

A spokesman for Northampton Partnership Homes said: “We have already committed to undertaking a formal consultation with residents in the area before any plans are approved.”
