Plans for a third Lidl supermarket in Northampton are on the cards following the submission of a planning application.

Lidl said it has submitted a planning application to Northampton Borough Council to build a store on the gasworks site in Towcester Road.

If given the go ahead it would mean a third Lidl store opening in Northampton with branches already in Weston Favell and Sixfields.

A Lidl spokesperson said: “We have submitted a planning application to build a new Lidl store on the Gas Holder Site, Towcester Road and are looking forward to the council’s decision.”

The gasworks site sits next to B&Q in Towcester Road and across the road from St Jame’s Retail Park.

The budget German supermarket has purchased the site from National Grid, subject to the completion of site remediation works.

In July 2014 National Grid was given outline permission for retail. cafes and restaurants.

It is not yet known how many jobs the new store would create or how long it would take to build.

The Lidl spokesman added: “We’d like to thank local residents for their support and hope to update them soon.”
