A broken down line inspection train is currently causing delays to rail services in Northampton.

Train operators London Midland have reported that Virgin Trains are having to be diverted through Northampton station after a Network Rail test train broke down on track just outside the town at around 2.50pm.

A spokesperson for London Midland said the main services affected are currently Virgin Train routes between Brimingham and London Euston on the southbound route.

However, she said the diversion is causing some congestion on the route leaving Northampton, with delays to trains of up to 11 minutes.

She added: “The current picture is we are getting a couple of services running at maximum 11 minutes late.

“As the emergency crews are now on site coupling the broken down train to have it towed away, we are hoping to get the problem fixed very soon.”
