BREAKING NEWS: Police confirm identity of body found in River Nene in Northampton

Police investigating the discovery of a body in the River Nene on Monday afternoon have confirmed the identity of the victim.

The body of man aged in his 50s or 60s was found by a member of the public spotted the body at about 3pm on Monday, close to a sluice gate near the Avon headquarters in Nunn Mills Road.

There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

Last night, police issued an appeal for help to identify the man who they said was a double amputee and was wearing a Six Nations rugby shirt.

Tonight, Det Sgt Hayley Thurston, who is leading the investigation, said: “I can now confirm that we have formally identified the deceased and his next of kin have been informed.

“Northamptonshire Police would like to take this opportunity to thank the public who responded to our media appeal last night and enabled us to identify him at the earliest opportunity and inform relatives,” Det Sgt Thurston added.

The police have not released details of his identity to the media.
