A man has died in a crash involving a lorry and a car on the M1 in Northamptonshire this morning.

The man was driving the car when the collision took place at about 4.15am on the northbound carriageway between junctions 16 and 17.

The M1 was reopened just after 11am, although there are still long delays as a result of the seven hour closure which allowed the vehicles involved to be recovered from the scene

and collision investigators complete their work.

The Highways Agency said: “Thanks for your patience have a safe onward journey.”

Emergency services arrived on the scene just after 4.15am and Northamptonshire Police requested the closure of the road from junction 16 at Northampton/Daventry to junction 18 at Crick.

East Midlands traffic officers for the Highways Agency closed the junction at around 4.40am.

Traffic officers arrived on scene to help clear traffic trapped between junction 16 and the incident scene.

Diversions were put in place during the closure, causing long delays on surrounding routes.
