The man was driving the car when the collision took place at about 4.15am on the northbound carriageway between junctions 16 and 17.
The M1 was reopened just after 11am, although there are still long delays as a result of the seven hour closure which allowed the vehicles involved to be recovered from the scene
and collision investigators complete their work.
The Highways Agency said: “Thanks for your patience have a safe onward journey.”
Emergency services arrived on the scene just after 4.15am and Northamptonshire Police requested the closure of the road from junction 16 at Northampton/Daventry to junction 18 at Crick.
