BREAKING NEWS: Main road in Northampton closed due to gas leak

The A5076 Mereway in Northampton has been closed this afternoon due to a gas leak in the central reservation.

There is very slow traffic in both directions between Tesco and Queen Eleanor roundabout as a result of the closure.

There is also congestion on Danes Camp Way to the Hunsbury Hill Avenue junctions and on Towcester Road to Gas Street roundabout.

A spokesperson for Northamptonshire County Council said: “The gas company is on site now and we’re working to have a lane in each direction re-opened by 6pm, with the road fully open by midnight.”

Bus company Stagecoach has reported delays to services.

Just before 4pm the company tweeted: “#Northampton all routes into town from Towcester Rd subject to delays due to Road Closure.”
