Leader of Northampton Borough Council, Mary Markham, will be taking part in the Big Sleepout at Northants County Cricket Ground later this month to raise awareness of the issues faced by homeless people.

The event, on Friday, January 29, will also raise money for the Northampton Hope Centre.

The sponsored Big Sleepout event is organised annually by the centre and is the charity’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Last year 79 sleepers took part and helped raise over £28,000. This year Northampton Hope Centre is hoping to raise even more funds and is in the process of recruiting people to take part for this event, which will be held at Northants County Cricket Ground.

Councillor Mary Markham said, “This is the fourth year I have taken part in the Big Sleepout and although it can be tough I feel honoured to be a part of it. Experiencing a little of what it means to be homeless and spending the night talking to people who were either homeless or have been homeless is a real eye-opener. Homelessness can affect any one of us and so it is important to keep raising awareness and taking part in events like this. The more sponsorship everyone taking part can make, the more we can help the Hope Centre.”

Sue Wright from the Hope Centre said, “We are delighted that Mary Markham will be joining us once again for the Big Sleepout. As well as being a valued Trustee of the Hope Centre, Mary has actively raised funds for us by taking part in our Big Sleepout event over a number of years. Her on-going support and commitment to helping us provide essential services to some of the most vulnerable people in our community is greatly appreciated.”
