'˜Beer Monster' from Northampton aiming to lose 10 stone by giving up the booze for a year

A Cobblers fan know affectionately as the '˜Beer Monster' has vowed to give up alcohol for a year in a bid to lose 10 stone.

Sean O’Callaghan, who regularly drinks 15 pints of beer on a match day, has decided to launch his ‘No Booze to Lose’ challenge after he tipped the scales at more than 25 stone.

The 53-year-old, who is raising money for Cynthia Spencer Hospice by being sponsored to complete the challenge, said he wanted to lose 10 stone in the next year.

Mr O’Callaghan, who works as a taxi driver, said he made the decision to give up the alcohol after a long drinking session, which involved consuming 30 pints of beer on the day of the recent Cobblers versus Charlton match left him feeling unfit and unwell.

He said; “I got to the point where I was drinking and drinking but it wasn’t affecting me and I wasn’t enjoying it.

“I would drink 15 to 20 pints and wouldn’t even feel drunk.

“On the day of the Charlton game we went on a booze cruise and I drunk 30 pints. I found myself struggling to walk up stairs and I just thought “this ain’t me, I’ve got to sort myself out’”.

To complement his no alcohol regime, Mr O’Callaghan is also taking his dog for regular long walks and eating healthier food.

He said: “I have been walking two miles around the Racecourse with my dog every day and eating more fruit.

“I have never done anything like this and it is going to be very hard but I have got the willpower.”

Mr O’Callaghan has already lost more than a stone since he started his challenge two weeks ago and he is hoping to raise more than £2,000 for Cynthia Spencer Hospice.
