Mrs Chahal - who has attended the awards event every year - found herself in total shock after being shortlisted for the Inspirational Woman Award.

She said: “The award is a great initiative, I can't believe the benefits of becoming a finalist, the publicity has already made a huge difference since Saturday.

“It inspired a number of women to discuss their ideas for services with me on Sunday and some have even signed up to volunteer.

“I received a call from a distraught person needing support this week and said they heard that we help people and were awarded."

As part of her role over the previous 13 years, she also provides a support service to the elderly Sikh community and delivers Indian food to the older generation who have found themselves isolated through having surgery.

She added: "The 'Sikh value' of 'helping those in need' inspires me to work hard and to volunteer, my passion is to make a difference to the community:

"It’s very encouraging to have received such wonderful messages about the short listing, it has inspired me to work even harder and volunteer even more time to the causes."
