The A45 Nene Valley Way through Northamptonshire had to be closed yesterday after a van collided with the central reservation and rolled over.

The road was closed in both directions from between Great Billing Interchange and Grendon, causing serious congestion through Riverside.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said: “We were called to a collision on the A45 eastbound, just before the Wilby Way roundabout at 3.25pm yesterday. A large van had come off the road and rolled over. No other vehicles were involved.

“Two air ambulances landed to take the driver and passenger to University Hospital Coventry. Neither had life threatening/life changing injuries, the driver, a man, had a suspected broken leg and the passenger, a woman, a head injury.

“The fire service attended as fuel spilled onto the carriageway and had to be cleared before the road could be re-opened - which happened at 5.50pm.”

Kevin Spears, 34, was driving from Wellingborough to Northampton at around 4pm when he witnessed the incident.

He said: “It just went up the grass verge and sort of took off, before spinning round in the air.

“We were lucky to have avoided it.

“Another metre towards the reservation and we could have been caught in it as well.”
