Despite calling off their strike action at NGH, junior doctors still caused 350 operations to be cancelled yesterday.

The planned strike, the first of three over a proposed new national contract, was set for Tuesday but was called off at the 11th hour on Monday night.

However letters had already been sent out to hundreds of patients telling them not to attend because the industrial action was to leave NGH short staffed.

The short notice had left no time to contact everyone again.

A spokeswoman for Northampton General Hospital said: “Although planned industrial action by junior doctors was called off pending further negotiations, we had already postponed some operations and appointments and unfortunately could not reinstate them.

“Approximately 350 individuals were affected by appointment cancellations and we’re in the process of rescheduling their appointments.”
