Restaurant Review: The Cordwainer, Northampton

When we booked a girlie night out to the theatre in Northampton, we wanted to enjoy a pre-show meal and a few drinks.

But we also wanted to ensure it was somewhere central and near Royal & Derngate, so we headed to The Cordwainer in Northampton’s town centre.

Serving food throughout the day and evening, this is perfect if you want to eat and run.

The Cordwainer is part of the Lloyds No 1 Bar chain and offers dining over two floors, in an open and spacious venue.

We headed upstairs where it was a little quieter.

There is an outside area, should you manage to dodge the summer showers, and the staff were welcoming and helpful.

The menu is extensive, including a variety of meal deal offers, including two meals for £5.99 from a selection, and lots of menu options, including starters and sharers, salads, noodles and pastas.

There were also pub classics, gourmet burgers and steaks and grills, with detailed descriptions and a variety of more than 30 dishes marked with a ‘700’ symbol to show they contained less than 700 calories.

We opted for mains and desserts in an attempt to be good, but dashed our good efforts by ordering a chilled bottle of Bolla Pinot Grigio to share (£10.69). This was a great tasting wine at a palatable price.

We tried the flavoursome lasagne, made with British farm-assured beef, which also contained bacon and was served with a colourful side salad and dressing (£4.50). Some of the menu selections included a free drink from a selection of soft and alcoholic options.

This was the case with the steaks and grills section. The menu told us that all the steaks came from the British Isles and were matured for at least 35 days. They are served with chips, peas, tomato and a flat mushroom, making it a generous meal to get through.

My sister and I opted for the 80z sirloin which, at £9.10 each (not forgetting that free drink option), made this great value for money. The steaks were cooked to our specification and were incredibly tender and flavoursome.

For the desserts we opted for the delicious Eli’s original baked vanilla cheesecake, which came with a strawberry and blueberry compote (£3.50) delicious and well presented.

The same can be said for the fabulous pancakes with ice cream that come with the option of the aforementioned fruit compote or maple-flavour syrup (£3.50). We decided to share this dessert as our steaks had been so filling. All in all it was a great value and tasty meal and the speedy service meant we were able to enjoy a great meal before heading to the theatre.
