All the fatalities were registered between May 25 and May 28 but only announced today. It is the biggest daily jump in the figures since April 23 when the coronavirus pandemic was still at its peak in the county.

This sobering news comes just two days after a warning from the hospital's chief operating officer and deputy chief executive that the county's death-rate had not been slowing as fast as in major cities such as London and Birmingham — and three days before the further easing of the lockdown.

Deborah Needham admitted: "Thankfully we have seen many patients recover from the illness, but we have all seen first-hand how serious Covid-19 is.

"Therefore it is incredibly important that those who have been asked to shield or those who are more vulnerable continue to follow the guidance.

"We have remained grateful for the cooperation of our community throughout this pandemic, however we need support in staying vigilant and continuing to follow the national guidance closely.

"For those starting to go back to work and for those meeting one family member or friend from a social distance, it’s vital we remember to adhere to social distancing guidelines and good hand hygiene.

"We know that by doing these two things we can reduce the spread of the virus and protect our community.

"By following the guidance and not becoming complacent, we will all make a huge difference in keeping our community safe and controlling the spread of the virus."

The latest fatalities have taken the grim total at Northamptonshire's two main hospitals past 400.

NGH has seen 237 patients die after testing positive for Covid-19 while four more deaths confirmed today at Kettering General Hospital makes the total there 173. All these figures are correct up to 5pm last night (May 28) when the latest data was collated.

In addition, 111 deaths among residents of Northamptonshire care homes have also been linked to Covid-19.

And a sixth person has now died while in the care of the Northamptonshire Health Foundation Trust which offers mental health, community nursing, sexual health and physiotherapy services within the county and at prisons elsewhere. No locations have been revealed for any of these deaths.

From Monday groups of up to six people from different households will be able to meet outside in gardens and parks — as long as households stay two metres apart.
