Northamptonshire County Council weekly Covid-19 briefing

Last updated: Friday, 07 August, 2020, 15:50

Trying to make sure there are clear messages going out to all areas. These are the same messages because they are best practice.

In response to a question about Chief Constable Nick Adderley’s fears of a lockdown within six months:

I hope the residents of Northampton will work with us to make sure that does not become the case.

If we need to restrict movement or businesses, then we will. But at the moment we are seeing good adherence to the guidelines.

Mobile testing unit will arrive in Wellingborough from tomorrow. We are hoping that will be here for a week.

Cllr Martin Griffiths, Wellingborough council leader

Enforcement officers will be out this weekend visiting businesses in the hospitality sector to ensure they are following guidelines

Four or five different forms of  legislation can be used to close down hospitality businesses that are not complying with guidance.

We have wardens patrolling the streets at peak times and we will always turn to engagement first.

I hope social pressure will be more of an answer to this than enforcement, when people start to feel they are not being looked after.

There is only one positive Covid-19 case in Northamptonshire hospitals at the moment.  But we would expect that to increase in the next few weeks as hospitals open up services.
