University of Northampton recieves 700 clearing calls after Government A-level U-turn

The University of Northampton has experienced a rise in the number of prospective students calling its clearing hotline, compared to the previous year.

In 2019, the university received 1,565 calls in the first three days of clearing. This year, the university received 1,580 – a slight increase of 15.

But, since Monday morning, the university has fielded an additional 717 calls, which is a significant increase on last year.

Despite many students now recieving the higher grades they were destined for before were moderated by an computer-generated algorithm, some have still lost out on their places as courses have been filled.

To date, at Northampton's university, 582 offers have been made and the number is rising each day.

Previous applicants who might have been unsuccessful are encouraged to get back in touch with the university, should their grades have now changed.

Head of student admissions, Dawn Mains, is leading the call centre, which is located at Waterside Campus.

She said: “We’ve been delighted by the number of potential applicants getting in touch with us, particularly during such an uncertain time.

“But, we can reassure our new and existing students that the University of Northampton has been working throughout the summer to ensure we are able to offer a safe environment when we reopen for the new academic year.”

Applicants who have already had their place at the University of Northampton confirmed do not need to take any additional action.Dawn added: “I’d like to offer my thanks to everyone for their help and support during a very successful clearing.

"It is great to see so many academic and professional service staff working together in a very Covid-secure manner on campus, as well as remotely from home.”

The university’s clearing hotline will remain open until the application deadline of Friday, October 2.
