The University of Northampton is launching a new service user group to help improve the curriculum on one of its courses.

In 2019, UK midwifery regulator the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) published new standards of proficiency for midwives, so the team at the University of Northampton is now reviewing its curriculum.

As part of this, the midwifery team is asking for anyone who has experience of maternity services, whether that is themselves or a family member, to join the group.

It is hoped that this group will ensure that the voice of service users are central to the education of midwifery students.

Victoria Brown, Senior Lecturer in Midwifery, said: “At the University we take pride in knowing that we educate dedicated midwifery students and want to make sure we keep doing just that.

“As a team we would like to offer people who have experience of maternity services or their family members the opportunity to join our service user group to help make our programme even better.”

An online virtual meeting will be held in June to kick things off, where the midwifery team will outline the purpose of the group and the different ways in which people can choose to be involved, with a view to it being as flexible as possible during these busy times.

Members can commit as much or as little as they would like about curriculum development, recruitment of new midwifery team members and the teaching and the assessment of student midwives.
