Headteacher of Thomas Becket School '˜phenomenally proud' of '˜best ever' GCSE results

Half of pupils at Thomas Becket Catholic School achieved five A* to C grades, including English and maths, for the first time ever.

The proportion of students that achieved a C or above in both English and Maths has risen from 43 per cent last year to 54 per cent this year, with 70 per cent of students getting A* to C in English and 61 per cent in maths.

A total of 78 per cent of students made expected progress in English compared with a national figure last year of 69 per cent.

Principal Yvonne Lucey said: “We are phenomenally proud that 50 per cent of our students made more than expected progress, which is a staggering 20 per cent above the national average.

“69 per cent of our students made expected progress in maths, which is also above last year’s national figure of 66 per cent and 30 per cent made more than expected progress.

“Under the new measure of Progress 8 (which measures student progress across their best 8 subjects) the school has achieved +0.1, which is significantly above the floor target of -0.5.

“We are also delighted with the results achieved by our disadvantaged (Pupil Premium) students; for the students achieving a C or above in both English and maths, the gap between them and their peers has closed by more than 20 per cent to 13.5 per cent.”
