Cobblers have been handed a huge boost with the news that Shaun McWilliams has agreed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2024.

The 23-year-old midfielder is Northampton born and bred and a product of the club’s academy. He has made more than 150 first-team appearances and established himself as a key member of Jon Brady's midfield last season, starting 34 league games, the most he’s managed in a single campaign.

He was due to be out of contract this summer and had been attracting interest from elsewhere following his excellent form, but the Cobblers have managed to tie him down to a new deal, much to the delight of manager Jon Brady.

"We are delighted to secure Shaun's signature," said Brady. "He was excellent for us last season and is maturing and getting better and better as a player.

“We will continue to work hard with Shaun to help him continue that progress and development of his all round game and I think the chance to continue that work played a big part in his decision.

"We are not surprised there was interest in him this summer and being able to hold off that interest and secure his signature was important for us. We know he is happy here, he is settled and enjoys being part of a good dressing room.

“Although he is only 23 he has a good amount of experience and he is a key player for us and this signing is big news for the club and our supporters. We believe we are having an excellent summer transfer window and Shaun's re-signing was an important part of our planning.
