Magistrates hear 38-year-old "constantly sent aggressive and angry" messages

A 38-year-old man has been told to stay away from a Northampton woman he assaulted and threatened — or face a year in jail.

Magistrates gave Dumitru George Bejan a suspended prison sentence after hearing he continued to contact the woman by repeatedly visiting her address, phoning and sending text messages despite being told she did not want to see him.

Prosecutors claimed Bejan threatened the woman over a three-month period between September and November 2019.

Court documents revealed that Bejan, of Lower Hester Street, caused the woman to fear that violence would be used against her, called her on multiple occasions and “constantly sent her aggressive and angry messages, knowing that you were not to have contact with her.”.

Northampton magistrates sentenced Bejan to 26 weeks and 20 weeks for the two charges, suspended for two years and for three weeks for one charge of assault on October 7, 2019.

They also issued a restraining order lasting until March 2029 and ordered him to pay £500 in compensation.

Bejan, who was accompanied by a Romanian interpreter in court, pleaded guilty to all charges — including three of shoplifting from Aldi, Poundland and Abington Pharmacy in Northampton during January and February this year, plus on count of possession of methadone in January.

He was given four more suspended sentences of one week each and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £1,070 plus a £156 surcharge to fund victim services.
