A 30-year-old Luton born mother of three has been wowing TV viewers for the past 10 weeks.
And last night, after a tense hour on screen and on social media, she baked her way into the nation’s hearts in the Great British Bake Off.
Watched by a staggering estimated 12 million audience Nadiya Hussain won over judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry with her showstopper of Big Fat British Wedding cake.
In the first round her iced buns proved a big hit with Paul saying: “Both of those tick the box.”
The technical challenge proved difficult for all three finalists, including Tamal and Ian, when they were asked to make millefeiulle.
But Nadiya went into the final bake with two wins under her belt with her rough puff pastry.
Her final showstopper of a with lemon drizzle cakes proved the decider in red, white and blue proved the decider.
And social media melted when her husband Abdul said: “I don’t care what she does in the final, she’s a winner. She’s a champion in our eyes.”
The showshopper was greeted with “It does look spectacular” from Mary.
And Paul kept up the tension, shaking his head and saying “Now Nadiya” before adding “That’s stunning.”
It was close at the end with all three finalists producing brilliant showstoppers.
But it was Nadiya who took the title after a tense final.
In typical understatement which has endeared to the audience she then said “It has to be a mistake.”
“Her passion was all in her bakes,” said Paul at the end.
