Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens’ birth, one of the most famous festive tales of all time will be brought to life from this week on Northampton’s Royal stage.
Running from Wednesday, November 28 until Sunday, January 6, A Christmas Carol tells the story of wealthy miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who is all set to greet the season with his traditional “bah humbug!”
But this year is different as The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future interfere with Scrooge’s miserable approach, vividly showing him the consequences of his bad-tempered ways.
Forcing him to confront visions of his past, present and future, the spirits make Dickens’ famous character re-assess his attitude to others and to Christmas itself.
Featuring some of the best-loved Dickensian characters, including Jacob Marley, Bob Cratchit and his son, Tiny Tim, Neil Duffield’s adaptation of this timeless classic is directed by Gary Sefton, who is known for his critically acclaimed productions of Diary of a Nobody and Travels With My Aunt.
A cast of professional actors and musicians will be joined by three teams of local children who were selected through open auditions to play street urchins and other young characters. Tickets are priced from £10 to £21, with family tickets and group and school discounts available.
For the first performance on November 28, the theatre will be trialling a Pay What You Can scheme.
