Restaurant Review: Middlemore Farm, Daventry

Pub quizzes. How did I ever manage to take part in one pre-Google and mobile phones? Not that I’m saying I make a habit out of cheating – or taking part in pub quizzes for that matter – but when my friend and I happened to find ourselves unwittingly in the midst of the weekly one at Middlemore Farm pub, in Daventry, recently, we decided to quit our chatting for an hour or more and give it a go.

Middlemore Farm is a surprising gem of a pub in the middle of a typical 21st century housing estate on the outskirts of Daventry town centre. It is situated in a grade II listed farmhouse and full of lovely original features, such as high ceilings and beams, giving it a spacious, airy feel.

On the Thursday night we visited, the pub was bustling but not overcrowded and we quickly chose a quiet table where our friendly waitress immediately came over to take our drinks order and then our food requests.

Soft drinks of diet cokes were accompanied by a small free bowl of nachos and a dip.

The menu offers a varied choice of pub favourites, such as lasagne, fish and chips and grilled meals of rib-eye steaks and lamb chops.

We’d decided to skip starters and headed straight for the main meals where I chose the 10oz gammon steak, £7.95, which was grilled and topped with a free range fried egg and served with pineapple, chips and peas. Meanwhile, my friend chose the chicken melt, £8.85, which was a chicken breast topped with bacon and melted Cheddar cheese served with a jacket potato and a side salad.

We thought both dishes were extremely tasty and very well-priced, and the portions were average-sized without being overwhelming.

Though we’d resisted starters, we did have enough room left for desserts and our attentive waitress brought us a specials board of them to choose from, as well as the usual afters menu.

I chose the indulgent and calorific chocolate melt-in-the-middle pudding, £3.60, from the ordinary menu while my pal had the trifle torte, £3.95, from the specials list.

She could really taste the cinnamon flavours in her trifle, but said it wasn’t overpowering, while my dessert was wonderfully comforting, though I did wonder why I’d chosen to have it with hot custard rather than cream or ice-cream. Still, the flavours worked surprisingly well and it was delicious.

Well-fed and watered – we had a bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc for £13.95 – we decided we may as well give the quiz a go for a laugh.

And what a laugh we had, staring cluelessly at the photos before us in the picture round (in our defence some of them had been morphed) and then sneakily communicating with our relatives via mobile to try to get some answers, as we are both of that certain 40-something age when Googling doesn’t quite come as second nature. Some quiz rounds completely passed us by as we were that busy gassing, we missed essential words.

So our list of the last five presidents of the USA would have been okay had that been the question and not “vice-presidents”.

There was a small moment of “fame” when the quiz master asked me to pronounce an answer in French. But, with our results in, we slunk out before the end figuring, Google or no Google, pub quizzes are best left to the pros.
