Earl Spencer will give a talk during the Althorp Literary Festival about his new book on the men who executed King Charles I.

The Earl, who will be hosting the event for the 11th year, said he had great fun writing it and was interested to see what audiences made of the book, entitled Killers of the King: The Men Who Dared to Execute Charles I.

The talk, which will take place on Saturday, is already sold out and the Earl said he was planning to read out sections of his book to give the audience a preview of the text before it is published in September.

The Earl said: “The festival is not an event just for intellectuals where you will get lectured at, it is a place where people can share an enjoyment of a subject. I have always loved history, but I need a subject that really grabs me to get me writing.

“I feel so lucky to have stumbled across such an interesting subject.”

The Earl said he was hoping to attract more younger people to the festival this year and may look to book some comedians and more music acts in future years.

He said: “We are hoping to sell possibly 8,000 tickets this year and the event is growing. But we don’t want to become as big as the Hay on Wye Literary Festival, we want to keep the intimacy.

“We pride ourselves on making sure the authors and the guests are all well looked after. We’ve always had the ethos of treating everyone with respect.”

The Earl said authors he would love to see appear at the festival in the futuer included Stephen Fry, Alan Titchmarsh and Jilly Cooper.
