Some schools in Northampton and Daventry remained closed on Thursday as concern grows about sickness bug cryptosporidium being found in water supplies.
More than 100,000 households have been affected and a total of 19 schools across the area closed on Wednesday amid fears supplies of bottled water would not last the day.

There were also angry scenes in supermarkets as shoppers battled to get the last few bottles of water available.

The panic buying was sparked after Anglian Water announced traces of cryptosporidium, which can cause sever diarrhoea, were found in water supplies.

Anglian Water has said it is investigating the cause of the problem and asked all residents only to use boiled or bottled water.

A spokesman for the firm said: "Until further notice, Anglian Water customers in Northampton, Daventry and west of Daventry areas are being instructed to boil their drinking water before using it.

"Only once drinking water has been boiled and allowed to cool should it be used for drinking, preparing food or cleaning teeth. This advice also applies to pets.

"Tap water remains quite safe for washing, bathing and toilet flushing.

"Anglian Water has taken this precautionary measure while it investigates routine samples that have shown evidence of cryptosporidium in the water supply.

"The company apologises for the inconvenience this will cause, but stresses that the health and safety of its customers must come first."

During a day of water problems on Wednesday, nursing home staff were told to boil water before using it for washing vegetables or letting residents drink it.

Vets also stocked up on bottled water following advice that tap water was not safe for animals to drink.

Restaurants and pubs also suspended the sale of soft drinks made with tap water and a least nine supermarkets were reported to have temporarily sold out of bottled water.

Anyone who is worried about their health should call their doctor or call NHS Direct on 0845 4647.

I wonder how many people (or in fact, companies) will overlook the less obvious uses for tap water ... like ice cubes, 'dispensed' soft drinks (the likes of which are served in pubs and fast-food chains, etc.,) ...

The scary thought is that if you read up on these outbreaks, is that they usually don't give an all-clear for several MONTHS afterwards ... there's an awful lot of water in Pitsford that has to be treated for this ... I think that I'll join Roger with a crate of Stella!

A message to the elderly and less able residents.

Situations like this tend to bring out the worst in some people who will try to take advantage.
If anyone claims to be from Anglian Water, they will have an identity card, on the reverse of the card are instructions on how to confirm if they are genuine.

If in doubt, don't let them in!

I'll have Roger know that there are quite a few discerning drinkers in this area.

Every Giro day I have a few Diamond Blushes with a little umbrella. I only buy the kids the best crisps, none of your own brand rubbish in this household.

Why o why are people panic buying water, leaving many supermarkets to ration it and even increase prices???? We have been told to boil tap water, and those with common sense would do so, and store it inside rinsed out plastic bottles or jugs, as I am doing for my 4 young children. If supermarkets were not running out then maybe my children could still be at school getting on with their education in these precious early years. Or even better the county council could pull their fingers out and provide water to schools and old peoples homes in affected instead of worrying about spending on menial things.

And what is the news from Carlsberg? Don't suppose that potential sickness will interrupt production.

Mr Pants,

I boiled my water before drinking it as advised and am now suffering from third degree burns to my mouth and oesophagus. Thanks a bunch Anglian Water, quite frankly I'd rather have diarrhoea.

I am so glad so many people are having a laugh over all this, theres trying to make light of the matter and then there is taking the mickey.

Try cooling the water 1st Mr Pants, and then have a think about those really affected. O and finally, if it happens good luck on your recovery.
