Three holes in one at pro-am

Amateurs Dick Spraughton (Collingtree) and Drew Russell (Farthingstone) and then Overstone pro Stuart Kier achieved an incredible piece of history at Kingsthorpe GC.

Competing in the NPGA Winter Series Pro-Am, the trio all bagged hole-in-ones, a feat which, according to the National Hole-in-One Association, is seen on average once every century.

Spraughton bagged the first ace as his tee shot on the ninth hole found the bottom of the cup, before Russell did likewise on the same hole a couple of hours later.

Within a quarter of an hour, Overstone pro Stuart Kier then holed his tee shot on the seventh to complete an amazing hat-trick.

The remarkable feat took the limelight away from Cold Ashby professional Shane Rose, who enjoyed a welcome return to form with the putter as he won the main prize.

After holing four birdie putts in a three-under-par round of 66, Rose finished three strokes ahead of current order of merit leader Carl Sainsbury (Brampton Heath) and Jason Newman (Cherwell Edge).

Although Northants County's Nick Soto won the team event, all the clubhouse talk afterwards was about the three aces, as the winner explained.

Rose said: "I've never known of anything like it before. It was incredible because I actually did see all three!

"I was stood on the tee with (team-mate) Dick. I was then on the first hole when the second hole-in-one went in on the ninth and then as I played the second hole a few minutes later, I saw Stuart's ace on the seventh."
