Skipper Langmead wary of threat of lowly Stanley

WELL PREPARED - Cobblers skipper Kelvin Langmead

Captain Kelvin Langmead says the Cobblers squad’s experiences of 12 months ago mean they will not underestimate relegation-threatened Accrington on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

Town play host to struggling Stanley at Sixfields this weekend looking for a win that will cement their place in the npower League Two play-offs.

Aidy Boothroyd’s side have been in exceptional form on their own ground, winning 13 out of 18 matches there this season, and 10 of the past 11.

But Langmead knows Accrington will pose a threat - because the Cobblers were bottom of the Football League a year ago this week and embarked on a run of form that ultimately kept them up.

“After last season we know exactly what it’s like to be down at the bottom of the table and fighting for your lives,” he said.

“The fixtures are coming thick and fast after this weekend, it’s Easter as well, and it will be about whichever team can get a bit of consistency in that period.

“Just because they are home games it doesn’t mean they are a given.

“We didn’t play very well in the past two games but got the results and it’s important to have that side to your game.”

While Town’s form at Sixfields is impressive, on the road they continue to struggle.

Four points were taken from a win at Southend and a draw at Wimbledon in February but normal service was resumed in March’s first game with a 3-0 loss at Exeter City.

Results elsewhere, though, meant Town stayed in the top seven.

“It’s a huge 10 games for us and I think if you’d have said at the start of the season we’d be one point off the top three then we’d have snapped your hand off,” said Langmead.

“We’re disppointed with the way the game at Exeter City went but we’re looking forward to the run-in.

“It was an opportunity missed because a lot of the teams around us failed to win but the flip side of that is that we’re not looking up the table at everyone on more points than us.

“It’s the time of the season when you get strange results but we’ve just concentrate on what we’re doing.”
