Sampson hits out over false stories

Cobblers boss Ian Sampson has hit out at a story that appeared in the national media this week claiming he was on the verge of selling one of his players.

The article, which ran on both the BBC and Sky Sports websites, suggested the Town manager was reviewing a transfer bid, leading to a flurry of speculation among supporters that a prize asset such as Adebayo Akinfenwa was about to depart.

But Sampson – whose team play at Macclesfield tomorrow – says he was misquoted in the original story and says there have been no concrete bids for any of his players at this stage of the January transfer window.

The manager also confirmed he is under no pressure from Sixfields chairman David Cardoza to sell players despite making three new additions to the playing staff at Sixfields in the past fortnight.

"I never said I'd had a bid for one of my players," said Sampson. "I said I'd had an enquiry about one of my players, and it was an enquiry that hasn't been followed up so we'll see what happens with that.

"I'm not prepared to go into details about it but it wasn't for one of the main players here so that gives you a bit of a clue.

"I think it's going to be a quiet transfer window because there's not much money floating about at all, especially in the lower leagues.

"The chairman has backed me well since I've been here and I've said that before we bring anyone else in we'd have to get rid of a few just to balance it out a little bit but he's not forcing me to get rid of anyone."
