Saints refuse to comment on Edinburgh move for Lamont

Northampton Saints are refusing to comment on growing speculation north of the border that Sean Lamont is in talks with Edinburgh.

The winger, who was part of the Scotland side that lost 26-13 to Wales at Murrayfield on Sunday, is reportedly 'about to sign' for the Scottish franchise.

Scotland head coach Frank Hadden has made no secret of his intention to bring home all his exiled internationals.

Hadden wants more control over player access and more training time with his squad, but it is constantly hampered by so many players plying their trade abroad.

In the last few weeks, Chris Cusiter has signed for Glasgow from Perpignan and Scott McLeod repatriated himself with Edinburgh from rival Magners League side Scarlets.

Lamont is one of 10 players exiled in the Premiership along with team-mates Euan Murray and Scott Gray.

Lamont and Murray are out of contract at the end of the season with the Scotland Rugby Union aiming to bring them home.

Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder has said in the past he is confident of holding on to the pair, but reports in the Scottish press over the weekend said Lamont is 'about to sign for Edinburgh'.

A spokesman for Saints said: "We don't comment on speculation."

And a spokesman for Edinburgh towed the same line, saying: "We are always looking to add quality players to our squad, but it would not be right for us to talk about players under contract with another club.

"The journalist who wrote the report didn't contact the club and I was surprised to read that story."

Meanwhile, Lamont is hoping he can squeeze into the British Lions summer tour to South Africa with some top performances in the Six Nations.

"Ian McGeechan is saying it's all about form rather than reputation, so there's everything to play for," said Lamont.

"I'd love to get on the tour but there's a whole lot of wingers out there further up the pecking order than me. To get an invite would be great, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

"The Six Nations is a massive opportunity for the boys who think they're in with a chance of making the Lions tour. I remember the last Six Nations before the 2005 Lions were selected, and it was all the boys were talking about.

"It's exactly the same this time around. The Lions is a huge incentive for all the qualified players. It's on the mind of everyone who's eligible, even those who haven't been capped, because they've taken lots of non-capped players before."
