Saints hooker has England ambitions

New hooker Brett Sharman has ambitions to play for England.

The former Blue Bulls under-21 youngster comes to Saints with an English passport, which will have alerted the RFU hierarchy. It is very early days for Sharman as he made his first appearance for the Wanderers at Oxford University on Monday, but he is the third Bulls player to arrive at Franklin's Gardens following Regardt Dreyer and Juandre Kruger.

So just how did Saints get hold of a hooker from the Bulls under-21 squad?

"That is probably for us to know and you not to," said Mallinder.

It seems Saints were tracking Sharman but a neck injury to Stuart Friswell forced their hand with Dylan Hartley also unavailable, playing for England.

"Stuart is on his way back and doesn't need an operation," said Mallinder. "But if we had another injury we needed somebody else to come in.

"Brett is somebody we looked at and he was very keen to come over. He knew Kruger, who gave us a reference as well."

As for his England ambitions, Mallinder said: "We want our players to have that aim and ambition to play for their country and play international rugby. Brett I know is one of those, he wants to make a successful career playing in England."
