Saints flanker signs for Bedford

Northampton Saints flanker Ben Lewitt has rejoined Bedford Blues after being released by Saints at the end of last season.

Lewitt played for the Blues in the 2004/05 season before spending four seasons at Franklin's Gardens. The 29-year-old signed a new two-year deal ahead of last season after helping Saints make an instant return to the premiership.

But with the arrival of Neil Best, Roger Wilson and Scott Gray in the back-row, Lewitt found the competition tough and made just five appearances, with only one of those coming in the premiership.

With Phil Dowson joining from Newcastle for next season Lewitt agreed to end his contract a year early to search for regular rugby and will replace Mouritz Botha at Goldington Road after he signed for Saracens.

Bedford director of rugby Mike Rayer said: "This is a great signing for us, of a true former favourite of the fans.

"Ben is desperate to make an impression on the club and get some rugby under his belt. It is also great for me as he will add a shed load of strength to the pack and he can play at six, seven or eight."
