Travis Perkins helps Saints take rugby into schools
Northampton Saints are launching a project to take rugby into primary, secondary and special schools in Northampton.
During the half-time break of the National League One match against Rotherham at Franklin's Gardens, Saints will launch the project backed by the government-funded scheme Sportsmatch, which matched pound-for-pound an investment made by Travis Perkins.
This has provided a total of 66,000 to let the Saints to run the project for a year.
Fifty primary schools will receive coaching sessions, assembly visits and class-based Tag Rugby competitions.
There will also be a teacher training element to the project, while all schools will receive a bag of kit to include balls, tags and bibs.
Nine secondary schools will also have the opportunity to take part with coaching and inter-school festivals as part of their activity, while
special schools will receive coaching tailored to their individual needs, culminating in an opportunity to play at Franklin's Gardens.
"Travis Perkins has a long-standing commitment to supporting community projects," said Linda Doughty, Travis Perkins' Trade Marketing Director.
"This commitment is something that the company is very proud about and we are delighted to be supporting the Saints' outstanding work in the community.
"We do not see this project as a one-off. We would like to see this arrangement continue for many years to come and become entrenched in the fabric of education in Northampton."
Sian Haynes, head of community at Northampton Saints, said: "Rugby is the ultimate team sport and we believe that it can be used in a broader context to help children's education and personal well-being."
