Revenge not on the agenda for Sammo
DESPITE the controversial nature of the Cobblers defeat at Aldershot in November, Ian Sampson says tonight's match is just another game.
Town lost 2-1 at the Recreation Ground in a game where they should have taken all three points.
That they did not was a result of a catalogue of disaster, starting with a dubious penalty against Paul Rodgers for a shirt pull that was initally saved and then retaken, with the second attempt naturally going on.
And then, with two minutes left to play, Chris McCready pondered over a clearance and was dispossessed by Marvin Morgan, who advanced with the ball and thrashed home a winner.
McCready failed to find row Z that night and has been sat there ever since as a consequence - although recently he traded Northampton's bench for the one at Tranmere.
It was a painful lesson for all concerned, and one that brings back bitter memories for Sampson, although the manager is keen to stress the word 'revenge' will not be in his pre-match pep talk.
"We played well down there but we got the wrong result," he said. "Any team that beats you, you always feel like you owe them one but it's just another game for us really.
"We need to keep our momentum going; it just so happens that we're playing Aldershot, who we lost to on a night when we were aggrieved with a few decisions."
"It was a real bitter blow. What with the penalty decision and the fact it was retaken, and then how we defended for the second goal.
"But we just need to concentrate on the things that we've been doing and try to keep this run going."
Town put in their best all-round performance of the current campaign against Accrington in midweek, where they were undoubtedly helped by the fact the opposition were confident and happy to play an open game.
Sampson is anticipating a good footballing contest tonight but warns Aldershot are capable of mixing it too.
"They'll be an organised team, dangerous on set plays and it will be a tough game but our form is good and we're not in fear of anyone," he said. "They've got quite a few six-footers but they will try to get it down and play."
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Chris Dunn will be trained by a new goalkeeping coach after Simon Brown left the club.
The 32-year-old has signed for Cambridge United in the Blue Square Premier, and Sampson has confirmed he will bring a new man in to fill the goalkeeping coach role.
"Chris Dunn has worked his socks off and regardless of who has been coaching him he deserves most of the credit," he said.
"Simon helped Chris but Simon also wants to play. I didn't think he would play here and so we had an agreement that if a club came in for him we would let him go and that is what has happened."
