Paul Rodgers to sign new Cobblers deal
Paul Rodgers says he wanted to ink a new contract at Sixfields to repay the faith shown in him by Northampton Town boss Ian Sampson.
The former Arsenal trainee has verbally agreed a fresh one-year deal at the club after fighting his way back into the first team in recent weeks.
On Saturday, he played 82 minutes of the 3-1 win at Port Vale before being withdrawn due to severe cramp in both legs.
Rodgers' crosses from an unfamiliar spot on right wing – he is a right-back by trade – led to two of those goals, and his pace was a threat throughout a good afternoon for the club.
The 20-year-old should today formally become the first player to pledge his immediate future to the claret and white cause, something he is delighted to do.
"I haven't signed it yet but I've agreed it and hopefully I can do that this week," said Rodgers, who retained his place in the Town starting line-up despite Luke Guttridge's return to fitness.
"I'm happy here. The manager and Crozzer (Malcolm Crosby) have shown a lot of faith in me.
"I've been playing recently and they've been good to me so we'll see how it goes from here.
"I was out of the team for a while but they didn't throw me back in for 90 minutes, they built me up gradually and gave me 75 minutes and 80 minutes but I'm ready to do a full game now."
The week ahead should see some more players confirm their acceptance of the terms offered them in the first round of negotiations at Sixfields.
Rodgers has not been a regular under Sampson but the player has impressed the coaching staff with his attitude, even asking for extra training to do after group sessions.
The manager was also pleased with Rodgers' swift decision on the contract offer.
