Round leads way as Thunder regain form

Northants Thunder 87 - Tees Valley Mohawks 52: After a three-game losing streak, Thunder junior men got back to winning ways with a comprehensive Junior Men’s Premier Division North win over Tees Valley Mohawks.

The win came thanks to an excellent defensive display which included some superb ‘junk’ defence on the Mohawks’ prolific scorers Crane and Nicholls.

Sam Round led the scoring with 22 points while Matt Yates and Piers Toone supported well with 20 and 15 points respectively, the former notching 16 in the final quarter.

Notts Nova 54

With Thunder leading 51-43 at the end of the third quarter, it seemed that the early-season 47-point blow out against Nova wasn’t going to be repeated.

But Thunder then proceeded to play some excellent basketball and on the back of 11 points from Sam Round took the final period of play 30-11 to record an 87-54 Cadet Men’s Midland Conference win.

Josh Elliott enjoyed another fine game scoring 26 points.

Good support came from Round and Ross Cairns who both contributed 16 points while Lewis Mooney returned from his injury to chip in with 12 points.

Stevenage Scorpions 14

THUNDER warmed up for their forthcoming clash against local rivals Wellingborough Nets/Phoenix with a resounding Under 15 Boys Midland’s South Conference win over Stevenage Scorpions.

The game saw the return of Pauli Laurinolli who enjoyed a productive 10 minutes of action and came despite the absence of a number of key players.

George Paul led the scoring with 32 points, while excellent support came from Laurinolli with 17 points. Andre Arissol and Timi Gril also contributed 14 and 12 points respectively, with the former turning in an impressive performance as stand in point guard.

Arden Griffins 38

Northants Thunder 91

Despite missing some key players, Thunder cruised to a comfortable Under 14 Boy’s Midlands Conference win over an enthusiastic but inexperienced Arden Griffins.

Coach Mickey Paul was full of praise for an excellent all-round team performance led by 27 and 22 point hauls for Josh Arimoro and Jacob Killeya while Rhys Hill enjoyed a fine game in scoring 18 points.

Bucks Hornets 78

Northants Thunder 45

THUNDER made the short trip to Aylesbury to take on Bucks Hornets in the hope of repeating the one-point Under 13 Boys Midlands South Conference win they had recorded earlier in the season.

In the event this didn’t happen with Hornets comfortably taking the game by 33 points.

In the disappointing defeat David Nieva top scored for Thunder with 18 points, Jacob Round contributed 13 points while Julian Abeam chipped in with eight points go with his defensive efforts.

Moulton College A 65

Noel Baker 121

THE Moulton College A team had to surrender home advantage for their British Colleges Men’s East Midlands Elite League game against a talent-laden Noel Baker team last Wednesday.

The switch of venues was forced because Moulton’s John Ashby Sports Hall was pressed into use for indoor activities for the College Sport programme following the bad weather.

Noel Baker fielded a team with no less than seven players with international experience and it showed from the outset.

In the defeat Matt Yates and Michael Darlow performed superbly scoring 27 and 24 points respectively with the latter also pulling down 10 rebounds to complete a double-double. Johnny Low supported well with 10 points.
