Press plays a blinder
ALEX PRESS scored twice as Saints got the second half of the season off to a winning start with this victory over Rugby & East Warwick.
It was the Northampton side’s first win in six games, having lost their previous five.
Rugby are Saints’ bogey team, but Saints were on top from the start and made the breakthrough when Joe Colantonio ghosted into the D to score.
Saints quickly doubled their lead through Press, and two more goals through Gareth Parker and Christian Howard cemented Saints’ lead at 4-0.
Rugby pulled one back, before Press made it 5-1 at half-time.
Rugby upped their effort in the second half, and midway through the period made it 5-2, before pulling another one back to make it 5-3
Saints kept their cool and sealed their win at 6-3 through Joe Kopka. Saints entertain top-of-the-table Khalsa this weekend.

Saints IIs 3
Barford Tigers IIs 4
SAINTS IIs suffered late heartbreak as they suffered an agonising defeat at the hands of Barford at Moulton College.
It looked like it was going to be a nightmare for Saints as they fell 2-0 down by the break, and fell 3-0 behind early in the second half.
Cue the fightback.
Dan Rose got things started as he deflected a Scott Mahoney drag-flick into the roof of the net from a penalty corner.
Just 10 minutes later it was 3-2 as Tom Scott-Collins got in front of the keeper to deflect the ball into the net.
And it looked as though the comeback was complete with minutes to go as Andy Smith reacted quickest to a rebound corner to tuck the ball past the keeper and make it 3-3.
There were only a few minutes left, but Saints conceded a pointless penalty corner, and from this Barford scored the winner.
Squad: Ed Holt, Guy Roberts, Lee O’Donnell, Matt Gausden, Tom Wightman, Jon Noble, Dan Whittaker, Andy Smith, Max Heaphy, Scott Mahoney, Dan Rose, Athiq Thamby, Tom Scott-Collins, Sean Henry, Matt Wilde.
Saints Vs 0 Saints IVs 3
THIS inter-club league match resulted in a comfortable win for the IVs.
The Vs played their part in an entertaining game, and enjoyed their fair share of possession.
But the IVs had the better finishing power, and they were comfortable winners in the end, despite the efforts of the excellent Steve Morris at the back for the Vs.
Squad: Scott Bashford, Harry Stobart, Steve Morris, Jeremy Wan, Gareth Voss, Antony Pearce, Luke Howard, David Henry, Tom Dysko, Matt Kerr, Ed Arnold, Rob Tee, Jacob Pryce, Rob Cary
Saints VIs 2
Nuneaton IVs 0
TONY BRENNAN and Dave Kelly were the men on the mark as Saints enjoyed victory over Nuneaton.
Saints were on top from the word go, but they only had one goal to show for their efforts at the end of the first half, Brennan stabbing the ball home from a short corner.
In the second half the VIs turned on the style and played some of their best hockey of the season.
But the total dominance did not result in a glut of goals though, with just one more coming from a brilliant diving effort from Kelly, rushing from top of the D to the back post to put a cross from Joshua Pibworth away.
Squad: Tony Brennan; Dean Gibson; Karl Flowers; Rob O’Donnell; Darren Thorpe; Pete Malpass; Phil Adams; Ryan James; Alex Jeffery; Jon Keep; Dave Kelly; Aidan Walker and Phil Adams
