Jimmy Singh proved he is Northampton’s number one on a knock-out night for Far Cotton fighters.

Coach John Daly had eight winners out of eight at a sold-out Working Men’s Club and in the top-of-the-bill fight, Singh outpointed Robert Kelly (Northampton) in a clash of the town’s top lightweights.

Both have won titles – Singh has won Golden Gloves and Junior ABA honours, while Kelly is a former Midlands ABA Novice champion – and as expected, it was an exciting clash of styles.

At the bell, Kelly, a couple of inches shorter, got on the front foot with his bustling southpaw attacks and Singh used smart footwork to make him fall short, then punished him with lightning-fast rapid-fire combinations.

To his credit, Kelly, having his first bout of the season, kept pressing, but struggled to pin Singh down.

Fifteen year-old Drew Brown claimed the scalp of Home Counties ABA champion Liam Loughran (Hemel Hempstead) on a majority points decision.

Brown outpunched Loughran in a thrilling toe-to-toe scrap that had the crowd on their feet throughout and 15 year-old Kyle Owen also had to dig deep to outpoint Tom Barter (Tewkesbury) in another give-and-take junior bout.

Their bout appeared to be in the balance going into the third and last round and Owen’s better work in the final session was enough to secure a unanimous points verdict from the judges.

Owen’s Far Cotton club mates Miles Stevenson, Ethan James and Karl Spick all took the short route to victory.

Eleven-year-old Stevenson emphatically avenged a previous points loss to Aiden Hagerty (Corby Olympic).

Stevenson stood his ground when Hagerty tore into him at the bell and drove him back with thumping body shots. At the end of the opening round, Hagerty’s corner signalled their retirement.

James looks one to watch. His two-fisted combinations to body and head were too much for Jamie Rowe (Corby Olympic) and the contest was stopped in the opening round.

Fifteen year-old Spick also appears to have a good future. He overwhelmed Scott McMasters (Academy, Luton) in the first round.

Lewis Roberts was another stoppage winner from the Far Cotton gym.

He was also in charge against Danny Parkinson (Loughborough) and the referee stepped in when he judged the bout had become too one-sided in the third.

In the night’s other junior bouts, Callum Mansell (Hemel Hempstead) and Gavin Mabor (Tewkesbury) were points winners over Jake Bell (Academy) and A Bindle (Loughborough) respectively.
