David gets chance to kick-start his career

Paul David gets the chance to kick-start his career this month.

David will meet unbeaten Travis Dickinson over eight rounds in Aberdeen two weeks tonight in an eight-round fight that the English super-middleweight champion hopes will launch a massive year for him.

The Northampton ace has boxed just once since reaching the final of ‘Prizefighter in June 2010 and since then, fights with Paul Smith and Tony Bellew for British and Commonwealth titles respectively have both fallen through.

Frustrated, David quit the Ingles gym where he’s been based since the start of his professional career in 2006 and has headed to Canning Town to train with Johnny Eames at his TKO Gym.

Their first fight together is a real crossroads match up in front of the Sky Sports cameras on the undercard of Lee McAllister’s European title challenge.

Dickinson, from Newcastle and unbeaten in 10 fights, is also looking to relaunch his career having not boxed since he scooped £32,000 by winning the light-heavyweight ‘Prizefighter’ in January, 2011.

“He must have spent all his money !” laughed 27 year-old David. “All I remember about Dickinson from watching ‘Prizefighter’ is his tattoos!

“I don’t think he will cause me any problems. I’ve got the ability to get through fights like this.

“This fight could be the start of something big for me. 2012 will be the year when Northampton gets its first British champion.”

Explaining his decision to leave the Ingles’ gym, David said: “Nothing was happening for me. I had to make changes.

“I need meaningful fights at this stage of my career. I’m 27 years-old, the English champion and feel I’m at my peak.”

David, a slippery boxer with knock-out power in either fist, has been sharpening his skills sparring his new stable-mates including ex-British cruiserweight champion Leon Williams.

“I feel stronger and faster than them all,” said David, who hopes beating Dickinson will lead to a major title fight.

Bellew defends his British light-heavyweight title against Danny McIntosh in April, Derby power-puncher Ovill McKenzie wears the Commonwealth belt and at super-middleweight, David is eyeing a match up with British and Commonwealth king George Groves. Groves defends his titles against Kenny Anderson in a rematch next month and David said: “Groves has already beaten him, so why is he boxing him again? It’s time Groves took on a real challenge and boxed me.”
