Cameron keeps chances alive

STANDENS BARN starlet Chantelle Cameron kept her Olympic hopes alive with a win in Brazil last week.

Cameron clinched victory against Argentina’s Leonela Sanchez to ensure the trip to South America didn’t end in disappointment.

The 20-year-old went into the fight on the back of a defeat to Brazilian big-hitter Roselaine Silva and knew victory was needed as her two rivals for a spot at London 2012 had already enjoyed victories.

Amanda Coulson and Natasha Jonas, who are both competing with Cameron for the one place in the GB squad at 60kg, both won one and lost one on South American soil.

And Cameron’s success against Sanchez ensured she stayed level with her competitors, leaving her in optimistic mood.

“It (the trip to Brazil) was really good,” said Cameron. “I should have won both bouts but I was robbed in the first one.

“Everyone said I should have won it but she had the home crowd on her side.

“I dominated against the Argentinian and got some clear shots in. I made sure she couldn’t hit me back.

“All the coaches are saying they can see the improvement in me is crazy.”

Cameron claims the difference between her, Coulson and Jonas is now ‘paper thin’ and she believes the trip to South America will have done her good in her quest for an Olympic place.

The talented former kickboxer knows she has much to improve on but realises she’s got a few more years of boxing before she reaches her peak.

Cameron said: “I’m only 20 and I’ve not even hit my peak yet. The peak for a woman athlete is at about 25, 26.

“Brazil was a massive learning curve for me. I got a whole different view of things in terms of how they train and how limited their gym facilities are.

“Two weeks training in the heat was horrible and I’m glad to be back.”

Cameron is now set to head to the Czech Republic with the GB squad next month as her bid for an Olympic place intensifies.

Kingsthorpe abc had two fighters in action at the recent Campol boxing show at St Ives Leisure Centre.

Aran Doherty, and Conner Gilligan were matched on the bill.

Doherty’s opponent did not make it on the night, but Gilligan was involved in a good scrap with Richard Coulson (Campol).

The Kingsthorpe hitter claimed his second success of the season on a unanimous decision after winning all three rounds.

Former world heavyweight champion Frank Bruno will be appearing at the Picturedrome in Northampton on Friday, March 23.

Bruno will be talking about his boxing career and other stages of his life out of boxing. There will also be a comedian, memorabilia auction and raffle.

Tickets are priced at £25 with VIP tickets, which include a meet and greet with Frank and a photo with him, costing £50.

The night will be sponsored by local company Comms Group with thanks to Paul Simmons.
