NORTHANTS BASKETBALL CLUB: Yates seals last-gasp win for Thunder

Thunder men retained their unbeaten record and top place in the VCARS Division Four Midland Conference table, but not without a serious scare as they won 67-66.

Third-placed Bromsgrove were leading 66-65 with just over a minute to play when Jacob Holt hit one of two free throws to tie the scores.

Bears’ veteran guard Robin Hall was then fouled, but missed both of his efforts from the charity stripe before Jonny Yates made the same trip for Thunder with just seconds remaining.

Yates converted the second of his two free throws to put his team one point up an advantage and they were able to hold on to.

Leon Henry and Leome Francis led the Thunder scoring with 20 and 19 points respectively with good support coming from Jonny Yates with 13 points.

Cheshire Jets 75 Northants Thunder 70

NORTHANTS were narrowly beaten in this Junior Men’s Premier Division North game.

Thunder were 32-30 ahead at half-time, but could’t maintain their advantage.

Matt Yates top scored with 22 points before fouling out while Luke Lewis and Jack Thomas had seven three–pointers between them in their 16 and 15 point hauls.

Sevenoaks Suns 91 Northants Lightning 37

LIGHTNING crashed out of the Junior Women’s Sure Shot National Cup at the semi-final stage as they were outclassed by Sevenoaks.

Lightning travelled to Kent without a number of senior players and were forced to draft in several players from the club’s under 15 team and they found the going tough.

Steph Ogden and Rio Blessyn top scored with 14 and 11 points respectively .

Cheshire Jets 70 Northants Thunder 50

THUNDER were second best in this Cadet Men’s Premier Division North.

They travelled north without leading scorer Pauli Laurinolli and with several players far from 100 per cent fit, and paid the price.

The Thunder scoring was dominated by George Paul and Josh Round who scored 19 and 16 points respectively.

Northants Lightning Too 62 Nottingham Wildcats 39

LIGHTNING kept alive their play-off hopes with this comfortable Cadette Women’s Midland, South-West Conference win over Wildcats.

Steph Ogden scored 25 points while Amy Boot scored 21, including four three-pointers.

Northants Lightning 83 Solent Suns 44

THE Northants Under-15 girls also kept their play-off chances alive as they beat Solent Suns.

They moved into second place in the Midland South West Conference table.

Ruchae Walton scored 20 points and hauled down 14 rebounds, while Lauren Milne (13pts), Caitlin Stewart (12), Charlotte Berridge (14) and Abbi Hobs (8) did their bit.

Derby Trailblazers 61 Northants Thunder 92

THUNDER travelled to derby with just eight players, but still secured an excellent Under 15 Boys Midland Conference win.

Carlo Nieva led the team’s scoring with 30 points and he received good support from Jacob Killeya with 14, Oliver Thomas (11) and Will Grosvenor (11).

Northants Thunder 39 Bucks Hornets 86

THERE was no joy for Thunder in this Under 13 Boys Midlands Conference game.

Jared Ryan was the only Thunder player to reach double figures with 12 points.

Reading Rockets 62 Northants Thunder 60

A DAY after the defeat to Bucksm, a weakened Thunder were edged out at Reading.

Ed Taylan led the scoring with 22 points and good support came from Zak Kitchen (12).

Northants Lightning 65 Norfolk Incini 26

THE Under-13 girls were delighted to pick up their second Under 13 Girls East Anglian League win of the season.

Bahira Barakat, Ellie Solomon and Holly Winterburn all scored in double figures.

Charnwood College 100 Moulton College A 40

MOULTON were well beaten in this British Colleges Men’s Midlands Elite League showdown.

In the heavy defeat, only Matt Yates and Linas Bajorunas scored in double figures netting 17 and 11 points respectively while Cameron Gregory-Ring and Kyle Mayes both scored six points.
