O'Flynn is Keane to shine

Stephen O'Flynn has vowed to bring some of the Roy Keane fighting spirit to Sixfields – and ruffle the feathers of the players in the Coca-Cola League's comfort zone.

The striker hails from Cork, the same city as the legendary Manchester United midfielder, who was renowned for his intensity and passion on the pitch.

O'Flynn wants to bring his own little piece of that to a league that he feels contains players who are happy to simply go through the motions.

And he is confident that in doing so, he will extend his contract at Northampton beyond the end of the current campaign.

"Everyone thrives on competition and you need competition to keep you driving against one another," said the 27-year-old, who is in line for an overdue debut at Macclesfield this weekend – providing the snow holds off.

"I think in England over the years there maybe hasn't been enough of that. You've got lots of overpaid players and people not working hard enough.

"Around the country there are a lot of players who are just going through the motions. I've got a six-month contract and I'm looking at that as a six-month trial. I'm going to do everything I possibly can to get some goals and get a longer deal.

"I think that's a big thing, especially for the players who are coming over from Ireland.

"I'm from Cork and I like to think I've got a bit of that Roy Keane passion and drive about me."

O'Flynn signed almost a fortnight ago but has been denied the chance to demonstrate his renowned power due to the postponement of Saturday's home game against Chesterfield.

He may well get a chance at Macclesfield this weekend, and the striker is confident that once he is playing regularly then the goals will soon start to flow.

"He (Sampson) just wants me to enjoy myself and show people here what I can do," he said. "I've been given an opportunity and I'm going to take it.

"It's up to me to show him and the supporters and the people in Northampton what I'm capable of doing for this football club. I wouldn't be here if I didn't think I could cut it."
