Sutil looks for “plan B” for 2012 Formula 1 season

THE manager of former Force India driver Adrian Sutil has said there may be a need to switch to a “plan B” for the upcoming season, as it emerged the German may find himself without a race seat for 2012.

The 29-year-old had been linked with the vacant Williams seat, after losing out on continuing his Force India drive to compatriot Nico Hulkenberg, but it was announced yesterday the Grove-based team had signed Brazilian Bruno Senna for the new season.

With an impending trial over allegations he caused grievous bodily harm in a nightclub incident after last season’s Chinese Grand Prix, and the only vacant race seat at back-of-the-grid HRT, it looks unlikely Sutil will be on the grid in 2012.

His manager Manfred Zimmermann has been quoted as saying negotiations with Williams were over in mid-December, apparently due to a lack of agreement over contract length. It is also rumoured Medion, the German’s sponsor, had reduced the value of the deal.

Reacting to Williams’ announcement of Senna’s signing yesterday, German news agency DPA quotes Zimmermann as saying: “We were not surprised. We have not tried anymore with Williams for weeks.”

Of Sutil’s future in the sport, he remained coy, saying: “Either there will be a surprise or we will do a plan B.”
